A Call to Action: Decreasing the Number of Sexual Assaults in the United States Sexual assault is a continued and rising problem in our society and women especially, should learn ways to reduce their risks of becoming an assault victim. The number of sexual assault cases is increasing at an alarming rate, making people think twice about what they’re doing and with whom. â€Å"Sexual assault is both a consequence and reinforcement of the power disparity between men and women. It is a violent act of power which, is carried out by men against women and children† (Sexual Assault). Sexual assault is defined as any sexual behavior that makes a person feel uncomfortable, frightened, or threatened. It is a sexual activity to which a person does not†¦show more content†¦Historically, male rape in ancient rime periods was considered a right of victorious solider against soldiers of the defeated warring faction. The philosophy behind this was the male who was sexually penetrated lost his â€Å"manhood† and was no longer seen as a warrior in the public’s eye. This custom has been practiced as late as World War 1 and World War II in the European countries. Back during Roman times, in Persia a nd Iran, gang raping was the absolute punishment for adulterers and men who slept with women from other cultures. In modern day when talking about male rape, we only hear about it happening in hails and prisons. However, within the last couple of decades male rape in the general population been brought to the attention of the public. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics from 1994, approximately 60,000 males aged [twelve] and older were raped in 1992 and, in the [ten] years from 1975 to 1985 , 123,000 males were raped (Sexual Assault). The most common heart-tugging, tear –dropping form of sexual assault is child sexual abuse. Child sexual abuse is the main form of sexual assault that is most widely heard about. Child sexual assault is the use of a child anyone under the age of sixteen, by and adult for sexual purposes whether or not consent was given.
